Are they real or IMPLANTS

07/20/2010
Dental Implants are the best way to replace teeth because they are the most predictable and function the most like real teeth. In fact, most patients forget that they have artificial teeth. Unlike natural teeth, implants can not have cavities whereas the alternative, a dental bridge. is susceptible to decay. Also the cleaning of a dental implant is much easier than a bridge. An implant is a titanium replacement for the root to which a crown (artificial tooth) is attached. The implant surgery is an in office procedure done under local anaesthetic ("novocaine") with very minimal discomfort afterwards. We provide the service of dental implants without an outside referral as our implant surgery specialist Dr. Lai is a staff member. Call our office to find out more.

WHATS IN A NAME?

07/20/2010
Over your last few visits you may have noticed our new name B&N Dental Professionals. Each of our 3 locations were named based on a locale (Dentistry in the Abbey, Millrose Mews Dental and Hughson South Dental Centre). B & N stand for Dr. Blair and Dr. Ng. Our offices are still owned by Drs. Blair and Ng and will continue to operate in the same manner. Our new name will aid our patients in identifying each office as many patients are not aware of all our locations. With increasing our ease of access, we endeavour to continue to better service our patients.

LASERS in Dentistry

07/20/2010
Lasers are the latest wave of technology to make its way through medicine and into dentistry. Although lasers are generally known to cut and remove things, it is less known that in dentistry the real innovation is in laser assisted diagnosis. We are now using a laser (the Diagnodent) to help us in detecting a cavity at the earliest possible stage so that the most conservative treatment plans can be designed for you. The laser is able to measure the severity of demineralization present in your tooth . The Diagnodent is an ideal diagnostic tool for examining the grooves of your teeth where most cavities occurs. X-rays can not be used reliably to detect early cavities on the biting surface of your teeth. So traditionally the only way to detect cavities is to pick at the surface for holes or guess based on discolourations. Both these methods are unreliable in early detection and only accurate on larger cavities. This means cavities missed at early stages will likely require freezing via a needle to treat comfortably. What does this mean for you? Earlier detection of a cavity, means smaller fillings, shorter appointment (as little as 10 minutes), and often times without the need for needles(anaesthetics) because there is no pain. Also, being able to quantify decay, allows us to objectively and accurately watch very small cavities and decide on the appropriate time to restore them. COMPLIMENTARY DIAGNODENT EXAM INCLUDED AT ALL CHECKUP VISITS

No needle dentistry!

07/20/2010
Cavities detected early enough can be treated WITHOUT a local anaesthetic (needle) as the penetration into the sensitive portion of the teeth (dentin) is small. Wait too long then you will require a needle. How a cavity is cleaned out by way of a drill, air abrasion or a hard tissue laser will not be uncomfortable if the cavity is shallow but when it gets bigger then it doesn't matter how advanced the technology is it will still require "novocaine". Advancement in dentistry is not so much in the tools to remove unhealthy parts of the tooth (eg. lasers) but more so in the detection, diagnosis and filling materials. If you have questions, drop us an email.
